From the time of its premiere in 1937, Carmina Burana has firmly established itself as one of the most popular choral works ever composed and has been thrilling audiences with its dynamic and powerful music ever since. Raunchy, passionate, hedonistic and at times barbaric, Carmina Burana is a must see in 2006.
Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the music of the twentieth century, Stravinsky composed his Symphony of Psalms for the Boston Symphony Orchestra for its fiftieth anniversary season in 1930. Powerful and dynamic, the work combines three prayers - of the sinner for divine pity, the recognition of grace received, and the hymn of praise and glory. It is regarded as one of the most important works of his neoclassic phase and receives a rare Melbourne performance in this concert.
Complementing these two spectacular masterpieces will be the world premiere of a new work, "Mourning and the Light Within", commissioned by the RMP from one of Australia's exciting new generation composers - Sydney-based John Peterson. Known for his dynamic, highly-rhythmic style, and also his examination of social and philosophical issues in his music. This performance should not be missed. The composer's program notes, together with the text of the work are available here.
Come and attend MUCS rehearsals at Saint Mary’s West Hall (Near the corner of Elgin and Swanston St.’s). We rehearse every Wednesday at 6:45pm.
